General Information about the Area

Orlando is one of the world's most popular travel destination with more than 50 million people visiting the area each year; enjoying  the many attractions, beaches and events that Central Florida has to offer. Nicknamed the Sunshine State, many people travel in search of fun, sun and thrills and with over 66 attractions and 3,000 restaurants there is no end of choice. For those looking for an adventure beyond the parks, Florida has lots to offer. The State has glorious winding waterways, freshwater lakes, hills, forests, exciting cities, 8,426 miles of coast, countless bays, inlets and islands, and a legendary climate which makes this one of the most popular States in the USA. Orlando is situated in close proximity to dozens of incredible beaches, choosing which one to visit during your stay in the Florida area can be quite difficult. Each of its beaches is unique and incredible for one reason or another. Within easy distance are three world famous beaches - Daytona with access via Interstate 4 and the ability to actually drive onto the beach, a trip to Daytona involves some of the easiest navigation from Orlando without as much stress when it comes to parking. Cocoa, although the roads aren't as straightforward, a basic map or GPS will land you right in the middle of the sunny east coast of Florida. Cocoa is ideally located just over an hour from (and even less from other parts of town) and it has quite a bit to offer - in addition to a great view of any rocket launches from the Kennedy Space Center. Clearwater is home to picture perfect sunsets, white sand, and clear blue gulf waters. For this reason, it has come to be known as one of the best beaches in the State of Florida. Enjoy great seafood, great sunsets, and plenty of fun activities.

Floridian Weather...

One of Orlando's biggest draws is the year round sunny, mild weather. In keeping with the "Sunshine State", Central Florida maintains a comfortable average annual temperature of 72 degrees and a mostly dry climate from October to May. The summer is very long, hot and humid with temperatures up to 95 degrees during June, July and August. Being tropical, the period from late spring to late autumn tends to see a lot of rainfall which can occur on an almost daily basis, however these showers generally arrive out of nowhere on a clear day and disappear as quickly. In winter the weather stays relatively warm but much drier. From early November to late May showers are rare, the average temperature during these months is in the low to mid 60s occasionally reaching the high 70s.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November every year.

ESTA Information...

An automated system determines the eligibility to travel to the United States under a Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Authorisation via ESTA does not determine whether a traveller is admissible to the United States. U.S Customs & Border Protection officers determine admissibility upon arrival. The ESTA application collects biographic information and answers to VWP eligibility questions. ESTA applications may be submitted any time prior to travel, though it is recommended travellers apply as soon as they begin preparing travel plans or prior to purchasing airline tickets.

Once granted, an ESTA is valid for 2 years (or less if a passport expires or for any reason has to be changed in that period). Before each visit to the U.S. the passenger can update travel plans, contact details via the ESTA website (though not currently mandatory). If any traveller's personal details change on the passport, a new ESTA must be completed. If the traveller already holds a valid visa for the U.S. an ESTA is not required. The current charge is $14 per application. As of 1 April 2016, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with embedded electronic chip, identified because it has a unique international symbol on the cover.

Driving in Florida - Specific to UK Visitors...

The most obvious difference when driving in the USA is that they drive on the right hand side of the road and the driver's side of the car is on the left. If you are going to be driving then don't drink alcohol on the aircraft, the drink driving laws are very strictly enforced. The majority of vehicles in Florida are automatic. Always have the parking brake 'on' when you put the vehicle into 'drive'. Only use the right foot for operating the accelerator (gas) and foot brake pedal. If you have to use your wipers you need your headlights on as well. It is not illegal in the USA to undertake on a freeway so be wary of cars passing on both sides. Freeway lanes can change from three to four lanes at various points. "The free right at a red light" rule - you may turn right against the traffic lights in Florida but only if the coast is clear. There may be some instances where you are not allowed to turn right at a red light but these are clearly marked by signs. Do not park within 10 Feet of a Fire Hydrant and never in front of red or yellow curbs, as these are reserved for emergency vehicles.

Enjoy your driving experience and don't panic!
